Making Real Music in SL
Imagine making real music in Second Life, not just streaming RL tunes and your AV pretends to play a guitar. In this latest experiment, I’m trying to create an electronic instrument that lets the musicians play improvisational music in real time in-world. It’s still at a crude stage but the idea is there. In this video you can see myself and another av Jaco Masala (a RL musician) jamming together to create an ambient soundscape. Currently each of the 20-30 “drums” has a sound clip in its inventory along with a touch and color change script that gets activated when someone clicks it. There is also one loop drum that has a half dozen loops that can be randomly played with a click. In the future Jaco and I are planning on introducing richer sounds that work better together for rhythm and harmony. While making music is key to this, I’m most interested in the potential to collaborate with other av’s to create sound. Eventually I’d also like to introduce a visual element like projections that change as players interact with the intrument.

Hi Josephine! Thanks so much for your support. It might be fun to collaborate sometime. As I mention above I plan on working with my buddy Jaco Masala to add richer sound combinations. At the same time I’d like to think about how to integrate more visual feedback from the musicians’ interactions. Also a larger scale sound installation would be an interesting challenge… Juria

Like the sounds you’ve put in it. Have you ever been in Svarga (SL)? It has a similar soundscape machine. Greetings Deene (SL avi).

Cheers Miulew! I’d certainly like to make some noise with AOM and you. Yep, lets meet again. Like to think about ideas to extend the visual side too. Photos maybe…
